The Uphill Walks in Makkah Nobody Warns You About

Pilgrims walking up a hillside path in Makkah with the city behind them

Here's a number that surprised us when we pulled it: guests report an uphill walk to the Haram at 101 of the 232 Makkah hotels in our directory. And it's usually the way back that stings: after prayer, in the heat, when your legs have already done tawaf, the same street you strolled down now runs uphill.

Booking sites won't tell you this. A map shows you 600 metres and you picture a five-minute stroll. What the map doesn't show is that the Haram sits in a basin and most of the districts around it rise away from it. The clue is in the names: Jabal Omar means Mount Omar. Nobody built a mountain district flat.

Close on the map, still a climb

The part that catches people out is that short walks and steep walks overlap. These are well-rated hotels, some of the best around the Haram, where guests report a walk of ten minutes or under and also report the return being uphill:

  • Anjum Hotel, 5-star, rated 4.6 from 30,865 reviews. Guests put the walk at 5 minutes, and the way back is a climb.
  • Makarem Ajyad Makkah Hotel, rated 4.7 from 30,680 reviews with a 7-minute walk. Ajyad Street is one of the best-known climbs in Makkah, and the reviews say so.
  • Marriott Hotel Jabal Omar, 5-star, 4.4 from 10,552 reviews. A 5-minute walk, uphill on the return, though this one runs a free shuttle.
  • Sheraton Jabal Al Kaaba, 4.3 from 8,308 reviews, 7 minutes, climb reported. Also runs a shuttle.
  • Al Shohada, 4.3 from 13,786 reviews, about 10 minutes with a slope guests mention often.

To be clear, none of these are bad choices. People love them, and the ratings show it. The point is to book them knowing what the walk home looks like, not to find out at 11pm after Isha with your parents in tow.

Does the climb actually matter?

Depends who's walking. If you're in your twenties and travelling light, a five-minute hill is nothing. It matters a lot if you're bringing elderly parents, pushing a wheelchair, or planning to walk to the Haram five times a day through a Makkah summer. Guests in their reviews are blunt about it: the walk down feels easy on day one, and the walk back up gets longer every day after that.

One thing our data does show: 41 of the 101 uphill-flagged hotels run a free shuttle. If you've found a hotel you love and it happens to sit on a hill, the practical move is to walk down and ride back. We keep a list of hotels with a free Haram shuttle for exactly this reason.

Well-rated hotels with no climb reported

These are close to the Haram, rated 4.2 or better on Google, and none of the guest reviews we mined mention a climb. We're careful with the wording here: our data can tell us when guests report a hill, and it can tell us when nobody has, but silence isn't a promise of a perfectly flat street. It's still a much safer starting point.

How to check before you book

Five things worth doing for any Makkah hotel, in order:

  • Search the hotel's recent Google reviews for the words "hill", "uphill", "steep" and "slope". If three people mention it, believe them.
  • Treat the district name as data. Anything with "Jabal" in it is on a mountain. Ajyad Street is a known climb. The clock tower complex and the streets immediately around the Haram courtyards are the most level ground.
  • Ask whether the hotel runs a shuttle, and whether it's free. If a central hotel runs one at all, that usually tells you something about the walk.
  • Think about the return, not the way there. Heading to the Haram you're rested and it's downhill; coming home you're tired and it isn't, so judge the hotel by that second walk.
  • If anyone in your group has limited mobility, start from our easy-for-elderly list instead of filtering down from everything. Those hotels were picked on exactly this evidence: short, level walks and step-free access.

Distance still matters too, and it works differently than most people assume. We wrote about the three distance bands in Makkah, and who each suits, in a separate guide. That one covers how far; this one covers how steep.

Every walk time and climb report above comes from our own directory, built from real guest reviews rather than map estimates. Compare live prices for the level-walk hotels on our closest-to-the-Haram list, or browse all Makkah hotels for your dates.
