Makkah or Madinah First? How to Plan Your Umrah Route

Fly into Jeddah and head straight for Makkah, or start in Madinah first? It's one of the first questions every pilgrim wrestles with. There's no religious requirement either way — Umrah itself only happens in Makkah, and visiting Madinah is a separate, highly recommended trip. So really it comes down to what suits you.
The case for Makkah first
- You arrive in ihram and get Umrah done. Fly into Jeddah and you cross the miqat by air, so you enter ihram before landing and head straight to the Haram. Umrah is complete within hours of arrival.
- The hardest part is behind you. Tawaf and sa'i fresh off a flight is tiring, no question. But plenty of pilgrims would rather get that pillar of the trip out of the way and relax in Madinah afterwards.
The case for Madinah first
- Gentler start. Madinah is calmer and less crowded than Makkah, so you recover from the journey, adjust to the heat and the prayer rhythm, then travel on to Makkah rested.
- No ihram on your international flight. You put on ihram at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), the miqat just outside Madinah, before continuing to Makkah — far more comfortable than changing on a plane.
- Flight schedules work in your favour. Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport in Madinah increasingly takes direct international flights, and the Haramain high-speed rail covers Madinah to Makkah in around two and a half hours.
How to split your nights
A common pattern for a 10-night trip is 6–7 nights in Makkah and 3–4 in Madinah. Makkah takes the bigger share because Umrah itself, repeated tawaf and the crowds eat into your time and energy. In Madinah most pilgrims aim to pray the recommended 8 prayers, or just spend their days at the Prophet's Mosque without rushing anywhere.

So which do you pick?
If the idea of wearing ihram on a plane puts you off, go Madinah first. If you'd rather get Umrah done while you're still fresh, go Makkah first. Either way, compare hotels in both cities before you lock in flights: see our Makkah hotel directory and Madinah hotel directory.
